Common Signs

Children with sensory integration dysfunction can present in a number of ways.  Here are some of the most common behaviors:

  • Task avoidance

  • Auditory hypersensitivity

  • Tactile hypersensitivity

  • Poor visual focus

  • Very high or very low activity level

  • Very high or very low arousal level

  • Poor self-regulation

  • Repetitive talking, repetitive play, repetitive movements

  • Seeks pressure

  • Difficulty staying seated

  • Motor clumsiness

  • Poor hand skills

  • Difficulty producing written work

  • Difficulty gauging pressure, placement and position

  • Variable muscle tone

  • Social and emotional delay

  • May have academic issues typically unrelated to intelligence
