BDNF: Why This Protein Deserves Our Attention

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a protein which bathes the brain and peripheral nervous system supporting neurogenesis.

Neurogenesis is the sprouting of new neurons and strengthening of neural networks, making improvements in cognitive function possible. BDNF helps flip the switch for greater executive functions like working memory, processing, processing speed, focused attention and helps to educate muscles for better body awareness.

Although a naturally occurring protein, BDNF’s production increases by 300% through participation in specific types of exercise or activities.

Aerobic activity performed at a consistent clip with occasional short fast bursts is best.

Movement with a rhythmic, repetitive, reciprocal (Right Left Right Left) and synchronized pattern of arm and/or leg movement with added resistance kicks BDNF production into high gear.

I personally like using marching type activities with heavy footfall, as well as cross crawl type patterns with the hand making complete contact with the opposite knee. Add weighted balls in the hands for more resistance and you have a major BDNF party going on.

Use of audio engineered music or what I call Soundscapes…like the ones I am giving away for FREE on my website, especially those recorded at low frequency provide a resistive repetitive work out for the structures of the inner encouraging neurogenesis.

We can all benefit from producing more BDNF, but it is key to unlocking optimal function with our children with Brain-Based Disorder.

Go have a BDNF party…we can all use a good party about now.
